Unlocking Math Success: How Retrieval Practice and Spaced Repetition Empower Students
Feb 16, 2025
At BeyondMaths, we believe that every student has the potential to excel in mathematics with the right strategies. Two proven techniques we use to boost student success are retrieval practice and spaced repetition. These evidence-based methods don’t just help students remember formulas or solve problems—they give students a sense of mastery and confidence over time.
What Is Retrieval Practice?
Retrieval practice is all about strengthening memory by encouraging students to actively recall information. Imagine trying to memorise a new phone number. Instead of reading the numbers repeatedly, you close your eyes and try and recall it from memory. Each time you successfully retrieve the number, you fight against the forgetting curve - the natural tendency for memories to fade over time. For students, instead of passively reviewing notes or re-reading textbooks, students engage in activities that make them retrieve knowledge from their memory. This process solidifies their understanding and improves their ability to apply what they’ve learned.
How We Apply It: In our classes, we incorporate regular low-stakes quizzes where students recall previously learnt concepts. For instance, each lesson will start by revisiting a point of learning from the previous week. This could take the form of a dialogue, flashcards activity or short tests. Collectively, they strengthen students’ ability to recall and apply vital knowledge effectively.
What Is Spaced Repetition?
Spaced repetition is the practice of revisiting material at carefully timed intervals. Reviewing information multiple times over a longer period prevents forgetting and ensures long-term retention. For example, reviewing the quadratic formula a day after learning it, then two days after, and again one week later. This is more beneficial than reviewing the concept three times immediately after learning - otherwise known as cramming. With time, students gain a sense of mastery over new material, this reduces math anxiety and boosts confidence in tackling complex problems.
How We Apply It: Students are provided with tailored study plans that include reminders and suggested intervals for reviewing key concepts. For instance, after a lesson, they revisit the topic through practice problems on days 2, 4, and 8 to reinforce their understanding.
Why These Methods Work in Mathematics
Mathematics requires not just rote memorization but also the ability to apply concepts in different scenarios. However, memory often precedes application, especially in higher-order questions draws from multiple concepts at the same time. Retrieval practice makes students adept at pulling knowledge from memory under pressure, such as during exams. Spaced repetition ensures they don’t forget earlier material that forms the foundation for more advanced topics.
The Results
With retrieval practice and spaced repetition, our students gain:
Stronger foundational knowledge: They retain and apply core concepts effortlessly.
Improved problem-solving skills: They confidently tackle multi-step problems by recalling steps quickly.
Long-term retention: They’re prepared for cumulative assessments and future coursework.
